After the civil war, he returned to Wake Co., NC to run a deceased uncle's general store; He was a graduate of UNC, Chapel Hill in 1857; he later acquired a sizeable farm and fortune from another uncle; in 1890 he became the warden of the state Penatenuary at Raleigh, NC. A lover of automobiles, he would drive the distance from Raleigh to Morganton to visit his daughter Nannie and IP Jeter. He died in 1910
